In the video Ethan is prompted to chop off the top part of his finger in front of a camera in order to save his son's life. The game prompts you with swirling options such as: "impossible, determined, scared" to describe how you are feeling about going through with the ordeal. You have several implements available to to the job at hand a knife, saw ( yeah, think of the saw movies) and what looks like a nail clipper.
After you choose your implement and place it on the table you also have the option to grab some vodka for the pain and a bottle of iodine to prevent infection. The game play allows you to choose how many swigs you take from the flask, the resulting blurred vision in the game lets you know you're wasted. By pushing the control stick up and down you control your breathing as you try to lower your heart rate. The intensity builds as Norman slowly raises his hand to the table, in view of the camera, and rests the saw in mid air. You must then use the six-axis controller and thrust downwards quickly to sever the finger.
"GAAAAAHHHHH!" - your character lets out a blood curdling scream and falls to the floor as the digit remains dangling... and that's just one scene from the game.
Earlier footage has shown us in game fight scenes, a strip bar, and heart-warming footage of running with your son on your shoulders.
Would you really hack off a finger if your son was kidnapped by a killer? Heavy Rain asks us some very hard questions and shows us the consequences we face. To me open ended immersive games are a new type of media more in depth than any movie and more engaging than any typical hack and slash video game.
Quantum Dream studio's struck gold with this one, and sales I bet will match.
